Wondering if your child is ready for swim lessons? Here’s a quick checklist to help you decide! Every child is different, but there are some key signs that they’re ready to start their aquatic journey.

  • Comfort with water: Does your child enjoy baths, sprinklers, or playing near water? If they’re hesitant, consider gentle exposure before starting lessons.

  • Following directions: Can they listen and follow simple instructions? Swim lessons require focus and the ability to respond to an instructor’s cues.

  • Basic motor skills: If your child can walk, jump, or kick their legs, they likely have the coordination needed for beginner swim skills.

  • Separation readiness: Some swim classes are parent-assisted, while others require kids to participate independently. Can your child handle short periods away from you?

  • Excitement about swimming: If they’re eager to jump in and explore, that’s a great sign they’re ready!

If your child checks off most of these, congratulations! They’re likely ready to dive in. If not, don’t worry—exposure, practice, and a little patience will get them there.
